Summer Safety Tips for Family Outings

When summer arrives, the fresh air and the warm temperatures will beckon your family outdoors. However, common summertime activities can be more dangerous than some people think. At ADS Guards, a leading provider of San Jose security guards, we are concerned with the safety of all of our community members and encourage you to keep an eye out for the following summer dangers.

Avoid Bug Bites

While you’re enjoying a wholesome picnic with your family, passing mosquitoes may stop to dine on you. While they are usually harmless, bug bites can sometimes spread more serious diseases, like West Nile virus or Malaria. Other common pests, including bees, can cause serious allergic reactions in certain individuals. Be sure to use insect repellent to keep these critters away from you and your food.

Prevent Dehydration and Heat Exhaustion

A day spent playing in the sun can be a fun time, but it can also be a good way to become dehydrated or get heat illness. If your family is heading outside for a few hours, be sure to pack plenty of water and drink consistently throughout the day.

Avoid Boating Accidents

Before your family heads out on the water, equip your boat properly with safety equipment. There should be enough life jackets or preservers for each person on board. You and your boating companions should also consider brushing up on basic water safety by taking swimming and CPR courses.

Prevent Pool Mishaps

On a hot summer day, a crystal-clear pool looks inviting to just about anyone. Your pool can become a liability, however, particularly if there are young children around. To avoid accidental dips in the pool, install a fence with a lockable gate to ensure that no one falls in, and be sure that there is always an adult around to keep an eye on swimmers.

Stop Rashes from Poisonous Plants

If you and your family enjoy hiking in the summer, you may run across plants that cause painful rashes, including poison ivy and poison oak. Before you head out on a trail, make sure you and your family study pictures of poisonous plants, that way you can ensure you will be able to identify and avoid accidentally touching them.
